County Attorney

MISSION STATEMENT/WHAT WE DO

The county attorney’s office provides legal services to the Torrance County Board of Commissioners.

It also represents the interests of other elected or appointed officials when those interests are compatible with those of the Board of County Commissioners.

County Attorney John Butrick is dedicated to providing superior public service while adhering to the highest standards of ethics and confidentiality.

Services (What We Do):

Render legal opinions.
Review and approve documents.
Assist in the drafting and implementation of county policies and procedures.
Draft a variety of legal documents including contracts, ordinances, resolutions and joint powers agreements.
Attend and provide legal advice at Torrance County Board of Commissioners, Board of Finance and Planning and Zoning Board meetings.
Make staff available to advise county commissioners and county administration.
Educate and train county departments to prevent legal problems.
Initiate and defend lawsuits in state and federal trial and appellate courts.
Oversee and manage all outside litigation provided through the New Mexico Association of Counties.​
